Stone Fireplace FAQs
Need some advice before starting your outdoor stone fireplace project? Turn to our experts.
What are the best stone types for an outdoor fireplace?
The real question at hand is, “Which materials should I AVOID?” The stone used in outdoor fireplaces is exposed to both ends of the elemental spectrum—extreme heat and open flame, as well as cold and moisture. Therefore, you shouldn’t use materials—rocks and stone included—that are flammable or that retain water. Even materials that seem like they would be non-flammable (like pea gravel and river rocks) could trap water over time and risk cracking—or even explosion! Soft rocks like sandstone and bluestone should also be avoided, as they aren’t durable enough to weather the use of an outdoor fireplace.
Do I need a permit to build an outdoor fireplace in Oconee County, GA?
That depends. If your outdoor fireplace is wood burning and on the smaller side, you likely don’t need a permit. However, if your fireplace build includes any of the following, you should consult with the county:
- Any new structure 10 feet x 10 feet (100 sq ft) or larger
- Moving or adding plumbing fixtures or moving or adding new electrical wiring
- Pouring a concrete patio
- Any electrical work that requires going into the panel box
- Running new gas lines or setting new appliances that require gas (propane or underground gas line)
